Tetsubin Teapots - A Shopping Guide
Tetsubin cast iron tea pot is a Japanese teapot that has been
popular for almost a decade now. The Tetsubin (pronounced “tet-SUE-bin”) teapot is not only known for its
durability but as well because of its unique decoration. According to the experts, the actual design has been
influenced by the kettles of the traditional Japanese households of the 17th and 18th
centuries.
These common kettles were made to look simple and undercoated and you could basically hung
them on the side of the fireplace. They have been used only for boiling water and have never been set as a
decoration at home. 1800 was the start of the new process of manufacturing these tea kettles, as
they became more decorative to be more attractive among the consumers.
In ancient time in Japan, people were not actually tea drinkers. Most of the time
people from high places and upper class were the only ones priviledged to have tea ceremonies. During
these timey they preferred and used mostly ceramics, porcelain and bronze tea pots and tea cups.
Since they were quite expensive, common people couldn't afford them. Nevertheless as time passed,
when the Chinese method of tea brewing has entered the country and got introduced among the
Japanese, Sencha or brewing with whole tea leaves has become gradually embraced by the Japanese.
With the use of this process the tea drinking has been since spread to the people with different
social status in life. It soon became affordable and around the 18th century people started to manufacture
their fireplace kettles and turned them into the now known Tetsubin cast iron tea pot.
Today you can see different designed teapots from a fireplace kettle style to more brightly
works of art. It has been said that Tetsubin teapots were developed into a cultural status symbol of
its owner. The more elaborate the design art, the more high-status the owner is.
Indeed the Tetsubin teapot came from different roots however it nowplays a huge and important role in most of
the Japanese tea ceremonies. Tetsubin is used for preparing tea in Ryakubon, known as a small ceremonial
setting requiring a restricted amount of tea ware. In Kaiseki in which the process is having a small amount of
meal before the tea ceremony, Tetsubin is used with the meal upon serving. These are just
few uses of this teapot in Japan, however regular and common people simply enjoy drinking tea
using this teapot to keep the water warm.
The cast iron cookware has already proven its quality and durability over a decade now. Thus,
purchasing a cast iron tea pot can give you the assurance of long lasting use. With the proper care and maintenance
your cast iron cookware will definitely last and you can even share and give it to your grandchildren in the
