How to Use A Cast Iron Teapot

If you are looking for a durable teapot that still looks beautiful and delicate, cast iron teapots are the best choice. This kind of teapot is one of the oldest kinds used, and has been popular for four hundred years. Nothing can beat the durability of this teapot.

You’ll be able to use it for years to come, and you’ll surely be able to get your money’s worth, as long as it’s properly taken care of. The designs cast iron teapots come in will ensure that you won’t be embarrassed to put it out to serve tea on the dinner table. It has the ability to keep your teapot warm for long periods of time, which makes it ideal for serving tea in.

cast iron teapotSome cast iron teapots come with a thin enamel coating on the inside to prevent it from rusting. Although this is a protective layer of glass, you’ll still need to season it gently from time to time. All you will have to do is wash it with warm water, especially on the first time. Dry it thoroughly and make sure that no moisture is left. On the other hand, some cast iron teapots do not have the protective coating, and are more for stove top use. You’ll have to season this kind of cast iron teapot a little more vigorously. To do this, you’ll have to rinse it and fill it with a lot of warm water. The amount you usually use for tea would be good. Set it on the stove and let the water boil. When it does, you’ll have to pour all of the water out through the spout. Allow the cast iron teapot to air dry with the lid still open so that all the moisture does not get absorbed, and instead evaporates.

Enamel-coated cast iron teapots should not be placed directly on the open stove. The enamel inside tends to be very fragile, and can get damaged when the heat is too high. You should also never use metal sponges to wash the enamel. This will seriously damage the coating. For both tetsubins and enamel-coated teapots, they are neither microwave nor dishwasher safe. You should also never use soap when dealing with cast iron as this will seriously damage the pot. You’ll have to use warm to hot water. Make sure that the teapot gets thoroughly dried so that you won’t have a problem with the rust. It is not advisable to leave water inside the teapot for a very long time, as it could get absorbed by the cast iron pan.

If you don’t know what to use in your cast iron teapot and want to clean it up a bit, you can simply use tea! Use a smooth cloth dampened with a small amount of tea to wipe the exterior surfaces of the teapot. However, the inside should never be rubbed or scratched, as you might risk damaging the enamel coating entirely, which will make your teapot even harder to care for.
