Brewing a Perfect Cup of Tea Using a Teapot

Brewing a delicious cup of tea would be impossible without your cast iron teapot. Ceramic, cast iron and glass tea kettles are most often used by expert tea drinkers because they have a lot of advantages. They also produce tea with a purer flavor. Stainless steel and aluminum tea kettles often leave a metallic taste to the tea which can be very unpleasant. The English often use teapots made out of porcelain, glass or ceramic. On the other hand, the Japanese much prefer the traditional Tetsubin or cast iron teapot. They retain heat quite well and can take very high temperatures. Oolong tea drinkers often need smaller teapots that can easily be bought from Asian markets.

There are so many different kinds of teapots that it can be quite hard and confusing when it comes time to prepare the tea. However, all teas are prepared the same and once you've chosen the right kind of teapot, the rest will be much easier.

cast iron teapotTo brew the perfect cup of tea on your chosen teapot, all you have to do is start off with some cold water. Some people use hot water because it seems more energy efficient. However, it greatly affects how the tea tastes. Hot water tends to make the tea taste a lot flatter. So use cold water and fill up your cast iron tea kettle. Turn on the heat source on medium heat and let your water come to a rolling boil.  It’s best to pre-heat the teapot or kettle you’re using by filling it with hot water before using. This prepares the teapot for the brewing process, and it will take a lot less time to keep the water boiling.

Not all teas need boiling water, black tea and oolong tea, for example, need a lot more heat, while green tea and others need lesser heat. You can use a thermometer to check the temperature of the water. If you’re just drinking tea at home, there’s no need to be really exact about it. As long as the approximate measure is within the proper brewing temperature of the tea, then you’re good. Once it reaches the appropriate temperature, add the loose tea leaves. The general rule when it comes to the amount of tea is that one pot equals one teaspoon of tea. However, it will depend on whether you like your tea strong. Let it steep for a few minutes (around three to five minutes, depending on the kind of tea you’re brewing). Do not over-steep the tea leaves as your tea will be too bitter.

If you want a stronger brew, add more tea leaves. Leaving the tea leaves too long is a mistake many first time tea drinkers make. As you are steeping the tea, it’s best to stir or swirl the leaves inside a few times. This allows your tea to infuse a lot better, resulting in a tea that has a uniform taste. The leaves should have settled completely to the bottom of your cast iron tea pot before you serve it.
